UK Company Address Services — What You Need and Why
UK limited companies can require up to three distinct addresses. This guide explains what each one is, who is legally required to have it, and how to decide which services your business needs.
Registered Office
Required by law — every limited company
Director Service Address
Required for every director and PSC
Virtual Office
Optional — your public trading address

Decision Guide
Which address services does my business need?
I'm forming a new UK limited company
You need a registered office — it's required before Companies House will register your company. You should also take out a director service address if you want to keep your personal home address off the public register.
I'm a director working from home
You need a registered office (company requirement) and a director service address (personal requirement) to keep both your company's official address and your own details away from your home address.
I want a professional address for my website and invoices
That's a virtual office. It's your public trading address — the one clients and suppliers see. It is separate from your registered office, which is only for statutory government correspondence.
I want complete coverage — compliance and a professional public presence
Take all three services. Your registered office handles Companies House and HMRC correspondence. Your director address protects your personal details. Your virtual office gives you a public-facing address for trading. All three use the same Birmingham Jewellery Quarter address.
I'm a sole trader (not a limited company)
You don't need a registered office — that's only required for limited companies and LLPs. However, a virtual office can still benefit you: it gives you a professional address for your website and invoices, keeping your home address private.
I'm a non-resident or overseas director of a UK company
Your UK limited company still needs a registered office in the UK. As a director, you should also have a UK service address — while it can technically be overseas, a UK address ensures Companies House correspondence reaches you without delay.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about UK company address services
Do I need a registered office and a director service address?
They are separate legal requirements. A registered office is the company's official address — used for government correspondence addressed to the company. A director's service address is the individual director's correspondence address shown on the public register. Every limited company needs a registered office. Every director needs a service address. Many directors use the same address for both, which is perfectly legal.
What is the difference between a registered office and a virtual office?
A registered office is a specific legal address required under the Companies Act — used exclusively for statutory correspondence from Companies House and HMRC. A virtual office is a trading address you use publicly on your website, invoices, and marketing. They serve completely different purposes. If you want full coverage, you need both: the registered office for legal compliance and the virtual office for your public-facing address.
Can I use one address for my registered office, director address, and virtual office?
Yes. Companies999 uses a single physical address — Studio 9, 50-54 St Paul's Square, Birmingham B3 1QS — for all three services. Many of our customers use this same address for their company's registered office, their personal director address, and their business trading address. You take out each service separately, and all three can point to the same location.
Which address service do I need if I'm just starting a limited company?
At a minimum, you need a registered office — you cannot form a UK limited company without one. If you are a director and want to protect your personal address from public Companies House records, you should also take out a director service address. If you want a professional address to put on your website and invoices, you need a virtual office. Many new companies start with the registered office and director address together, then add the virtual office as they begin trading.
Do I need a UK address if I'm a non-resident director?
Your registered office must be in the UK — specifically in the same jurisdiction (England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland) where your company is incorporated. As a non-resident director, your personal service address can be outside the UK, but a UK service address generally looks more professional and is required for some Companies House correspondence to reach you promptly.
What does 'appropriate address' mean under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2024?
Since March 2024, every registered office must be an 'appropriate address' — meaning someone at that address must be aware of and able to acknowledge post delivered there on behalf of the company. An unstaffed mailbox or PO Box does not meet this standard. Companies999 operates from a real, staffed physical office, so our address fully satisfies the appropriate address requirement.
Can a person with significant control (PSC) use a service address?
Yes. Persons with significant control are required to provide a service address for the public Companies House register, just like directors and company secretaries. Our director service address covers PSCs as well as directors.
What happens to these services if I close my company?
When a company is dissolved or struck off, your registered office address is no longer required. Your director and PSC service addresses are also removed from the register as part of the dissolution process. If you are voluntarily closing your company, notify us and we will confirm when the service can be cancelled. We will not charge you beyond the end of your paid period.
