How the CIS Works
The CIS requires contractors to deduct tax from subcontractor payments: 20% for registered subcontractors, 30% for unregistered. Subcontractors with Gross Payment Status (GPS) receive payments without deductions. You must verify every subcontractor with HMRC, file monthly CIS returns by the 19th, and provide deduction statements. We manage the entire process.
VAT Domestic Reverse Charge for Construction
Since March 2021, the reverse charge applies to most construction services between VAT-registered businesses within CIS. The customer accounts for VAT instead of the supplier. We ensure your invoices, VAT returns, and software are correctly configured.
Gross Payment Status
GPS eliminates CIS deductions, significantly improving cash flow. Requirements: 12+ months in business, turnover above £30,000 (sole traders), all tax and NI paid on time, all returns filed on time. We help you apply and maintain GPS.
CIS Deduction Reclaims
Deductions suffered are credited against your tax liability. If they exceed your tax bill, you receive a refund. We ensure all deductions are properly reclaimed through your returns.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What is CIS and do I need to register?
The Construction Industry Scheme requires tax deductions on subcontractor payments. Register to be taxed at 20% instead of 30%. If you hire subcontractors, you must register as a contractor.
Can you help me get Gross Payment Status?
Yes. We assess eligibility, prepare the application, and ensure your compliance supports it.
How does the reverse charge work?
Subcontractors show VAT on invoices but do not collect it. The contractor accounts for it. We set up your systems correctly.
Can you reclaim my CIS deductions?
Yes. We ensure all deductions are reclaimed through your tax return or CT600.
What expenses can tradespeople claim?
Tools, vehicle costs, materials, workwear/PPE, phone, insurance, training, and subcontractor payments.
Do you handle monthly CIS returns?
Yes. Filing by deadline, subcontractor verification, and deduction statements.
What about MTD for self-employed tradespeople?
From April 2026, sole traders with gross income over £50,000 must use MTD. We set up software and handle quarterly submissions.
