How UK Tax Applies to Creator Income
All content creation income is taxable in the UK, regardless of which platform pays you or where the payment originates. YouTube AdSense (from Google Ireland), Twitch (from the US), TikTok Creator Fund, Patreon — all must be declared. If total self-employment income exceeds £1,000, you must register for self assessment. The personal allowance remains £12,570 for 2026/27. We reconcile income from all platforms and prepare your return.
Brand Deals and Gifted Products
Sponsorships are taxable income, whether paid in cash or products. Gifted products must be declared at market value if there is an obligation to create content. Genuinely free products with no strings are not taxable. We determine the correct treatment for each deal.
When to Register for VAT
If taxable income exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, VAT registration is mandatory. Services to business customers outside the UK may be outside UK VAT scope, affecting when you hit the threshold. We monitor your position and advise on optimal timing.
International Income: W-8BEN
Completing a W-8BEN form reduces US withholding tax on Twitch, Patreon and other US-platform income to 0% under the UK-US tax treaty. YouTube/AdSense is paid from Google Ireland so different rules apply. We ensure you have correct forms for each platform.
Equipment Expenses
Cameras, microphones, lighting, gaming PCs, monitors, capture cards, editing software, music licensing, internet (business proportion), studio costs, and streaming subscriptions are all claimable. Equipment over £1,000 qualifies for capital allowances (Annual Investment Allowance covers up to £1,000,000). The main rate writing down allowance drops from 18% to 14% from April 2026.
